Class list
Type straight into the grid, or paste a column copied from Excel, Google Sheets or your school system. Names only is fine — you can add tags next.
| # | Student name | Tags |

How pasting works
- The fastest route: copy a column of names from Excel, then click Paste list… and press Ctrl+V in the box.
- One name per line. If you paste two columns from Excel, the second column is treated as tags (comma-separated).
- Duplicates are kept but flagged, so you can fix typos before seating.
- Everything you type is saved in this browser automatically — closing the tab will not lose your class.
Tag categories
Categories describe a student; rules are written against their values. Gender, ability band and SEN cover most classrooms.
Bulk tagging
Select students in the list below, then click a value to apply it to all of them at once. Much faster than one at a time.
Tag students
Click any value chip to toggle it. Only one value per category can be active (a student has a single ability band, not two).
Room shape
Rows run away from the teacher; columns run left to right along the front. A pair is any two seats in the same column touching front-to-back.
Neighbour rules measure from adjacent seats
Blocked seats
Click a desk to block or unblock it. Use this for the door, the store cupboard, the whiteboard corner or the teacher's desk.
Common rules
Click to add. Every rule can be edited or deleted afterwards — these are just starting points.
Rules
Hard rules must hold. Soft rules are preferences the solver satisfies where it can, and reports honestly when it cannot.
Write a custom rule
The same building block: pick students by tag, then say how they should (or should not) be placed relative to each other.
Generate
Shuffles at random, then repairs the arrangement until the hard rules hold. The plan is genuinely random — press Go again for a different one.
